Some matters for consideration include:

  • the impact of the development on the daily lives of the local populace;
  • the effects on the agricultural and livestock activities of the area;
  • the changes which may alter the environment and manifest themselves in the aquatic an terrestrial flora and fauna;
  • the level of education and need for greater or different types of training;
  • the resultant pressures of and on, local and regional authorities trying to act in the best interests of everyone concerned.

It is on account of all these considerations that various protective measures are incorporated in the implementation of industrial projects - to ensure a proper sustainable development.

High-Tech equipmentHigh-Tech equipmentALSCON's assurance of the safety of the Ikot Abasi environment derive firstly from the fact that the best available technology is being used in the engineering and construction of the Smelter Plant.

In order to demonstrate ALSCON's corporate policy on sustainable cleaner environment the Company commissioned two consultancy groups - Babsal and Jawura on the one hand, Nun River Ventures and Metroplan on the other - to carry out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies for both the plant site and the housing estate.

For instance, for the control of cell emissions such as gaseous and particulate fluoride, two Fume Treatment Plants are being incorporated for each potline. There, the potential harmful emissions in the exhaust gas stream are cleaned and collected, using this dry scrubbing system. Here the incoming alumina raw material is used to adsorb virtually all the fluoride generated from the pots, and the baghouses then trap all the particulates before the plant recycles the enriched alumina as feed to the pots. This entire process operates on a 'closed loop' basis as almost every contaminant which could have negative impact on the local environment, is captured. This leads to saving money, improving the housekeeping and maintaining a healthy internal and external environment.

This goes also for the rest of the Smelter. The Anode Baking Furnaces are fitted with Fume Treatment and Dust Collection Plants to capture the minute fluoride emissions, as well as to arrest any traces of tar fume and/or fume carbon dusts. Water emissions which are very limited, arise only from normal sewage and bathing activities, and these are also properly treated before joining the site rainwater run-off to the nearby creek systems.

In other words, with the implementation of all the integration and monitoring plans recommended in the EIA Reports, with those already included in the Project Design, the Smelter Project will undoubtedly be environmentally friendly, sound and sustainable.
